Buying Clothing Online

As modern life gets ever more frantic, finding time to do the most ordinary of tasks can seem difficult for even the most organised of people. Luckily, help is at hand thanks to the rise of the internet and is popularity in the home. Consumers now have 24 hour access to online shopping from the comfort of their own homes, and the choice is not just restricted to the regional high street stores; customers can browse an international market at the simple click of a button.

Buying clothes can be especially time-consuming on the high street, walking from shop to shop and potentially covering miles of the pavement before any success; you might, perhaps, even trying on several items of clothing before finally making a decision about what to purchase. In the instance of online clothes shopping however, the consumer is free to browse without having to leave their own home, and can compare prices and offers from retailer to retailer all at their own pace. Though the cost of home delivery might be an addition not normally catered for, these costs are usually rather low and can be offset against any online discount a retailer might offer.

The level of online choice may at first seem overwhelming, and a simple key word search in a search engine isn't necessarily going to make things any easier. There are however several websites that can assist in cutting time and making the shopping process that little bit easier, by listing a variety of retailers offering a range of products. Essentially these sites are the shopping mall of the internet world in that everything is 'under one roof', saving time and introducing the consumer to a choice of retailers that they might not have heard of before.

In most cases a shopping website will try to give as many details about the retailer as possible including contact details and locations of high street stores. This may help to rid any doubts in confidence about making purchases online. With some careful shopping, some very good deals can be found. A random search on just three retailers advertising on the same site found a 10% discount for students, half price delivery on internet orders, complementary gift wrapping, a free newsletter with chances of winning a £100 shopping spree, a free brooch with all purchases made, and sales as big as 80%.

The main difference with buying clothing online of course is that the customer does not have the opportunity to try the items on. There should always be a picture of what you're buying, and the more sophisticated retailer websites will have a breakdown in size details so you can get a better sense about whether the item will fit. Deciphering the exact colour of an item may be difficult on a computer screen, and getting a sense about materials and washing instructions can be difficult. However a good retailer will be open to any questions about their products and have a quick and friendly customer service team on hand to help.

Because these websites offer an advertising platform for any retailer, the sites are not necessarily restricted to those selling manufactured clothes. In some cases there are specialised retailers that offer tailoring services where the consumer can effectively design their own outfit, or perhaps even buy specialist clothing such as outdoor leisure wear, outdoor clothing for climbing and camping etc. In most cases the retailer will offer the necessary accessories in addition to clothing, saving the consumer even more time. One retailer even specialises in fancy-dress clothing for those instances where something a little bit different may be required; items can be rented or purchased and the service costs the same as it would from a high street shop since postage and delivery costs are included.

Despite the many benefits, a sensible shopper will always take caution before making a purchase. Where the shopping websites are unregulated, there are no come-backs on the retailer if anything should go wrong and, although a small minority, fraudulent advertising, fake or stolen goods or even secure payment methods can be a curse. Always check out a retailer's website before handing over any money, look for recommendations from previous customers especially if the retailer is new to you, and take a moment to consider the terms and conditions of sale such as the returns and refunds policy to ensure you are as protected as possible.

For retailers the benefits of advertising online can be greatly advantageous; they have access to a potentially international audience, and the costs of advertising are minimal. In some cases the retailer might give a commission fee to the website, but there are instances where shopping websites will happily advertise for free. Cheaper costs for the retailer will very often mean cheaper prices for the consumer, so there are some great bargains to be found online. This is particularly true for those who shop regularly online and make their purchases through a 'cashback' website where they can redeem a percentage of the website's commission from the retailer in return for loyal custom. Yes, it's actually possible to make money whilst shopping!

The shopping website should advertise or list those special offers that retailers are currently offering, and in many cases these are exclusive to online customers. Where the offers might not be advertised on the retailer's own websites, the shopping page will list a series of 'discount codes' which, when quoted to the retailer on making a purchase, will be deducted from the total cost of purchase. One retailer, for example, offers a free cardigan and 20% off the consumers preferred item when quoting a simple four numbered discount code. The codes can apply to almost any sort of purchase, these are not restricted to clothing.

Weighing up the virtues and vices of buying clothing online needs to be an individual decision, though it should be mentioned that online shopping has boomed over the last few years, it would seem that the majority of consumers find it much more convenient both in terms of saving money and time.
