Buying Footwear Online

The world has undoubtedly changed since the arrival of the internet; communication has improved, the economy has grown, and as technology has advanced, so too has our ability to learn, adapt and enjoy the world in a completely different way. Having the internet in our homes has opened up endless possibilities, and one of the most convenient aspects is that shopping no longer means having to brave the great British weather or spend hours walking between different shops. Buying online means that you can browse, compare and purchase all from the comfort of your own home.

Although almost anything can be bought online, certain considerations need to be given to certain items, particularly clothing and footwear, as the consumer won't have the luxury of being able to try things on before they make the purchase. Although most websites will be able to give details about materials, colour and size, it might be a simple case of the items just not looking right once you've tried them on.

It is always advisable, therefore, to check the terms and conditions of the online retailer before parting with any money. Check to see what the refunds and return policies are like; for instance, making a return within the first week might allow you to allocate all postage and delivery costs to the retailer. All good and professional retailers should have a customer services department if they don't mention this online, so try to find out as many details before hand.

Buying footwear can be a little bit trickier than buying any other item of clothing, not least because sizes can occasionally vary from retailer to retailer, and the concept of comfort can be much more difficult to presume. However, one of the many benefits of shopping online, in addition to avoiding commission hungry salespeople in the shops, is that for anyone who doesn't have a standard shoe-size, there is likely to be a much wider variety online. The high street stores will only have a restricted amount of storage room and so they tend to stock the more common sizes, but online retailers will have the freedom to send the footwear directly from a distributor or manufacturer where all sizes stocked are usually kept. For anyone with a broader or larger shoe, this makes the shopping process a whole lot easier.

For anyone looking for a specialised item of footwear, then the internet will be the best place to begin searching, as comparing prices between retailers will be that much easier. Hiking boots and running shoes in particular need to have that added comfort, but for anyone requiring anything a little bit more unusual then the internet can offer a wide variety. Ski-Boots, Ice Skates, dancing shoes, football boots, slippers and even corrective or specialist orthopaedic shoes can be bought online, in some instances shoes can be tailor made to suit your own personal needs.

It is estimated that around 85% of people in the UK wear the wrong shoe size and in most cases the shoes are too small because it isn't widely known that feet can continue to grown right into adult life. Wearing the wrong sized shoes can cause a range of health problems, from ingrown toenails, blisters on toes, bunions and in some sever cases, can lead to back problems later on in life.

The best way to judge if a shoe fits properly, is to establish 'wiggle room' within the shoe. Extra width is needed at the sides of the shoes so as not to press against the toes on either size. Unsurprisingly, women tend to make up most of the shoe-casualties where they sacrifice health for fashion. The average slip-on shoe for example, needs to be smaller than the foot just to stay on. Shoe manufacturers should take a large proportion of the blame for the rise in foot-surgery as it should be widely known that for every shoe size (length) there could be a variety of widths, yet manufacturers tend to go with the average, so anyone who does not fall into this category could be causing problems for themselves later in life.

Where advice should always be on hand when we buy shoes from a high street store, naturally this advice won't be as freely available when purchasing online, so be sure to carry out a few small tests after receiving any footwear you buy online. Make sure that the shoe is comfortable to walk in; if there is the slightest bit of discomfort then it could lead to painful problems after a long walk. Presuming that shoes need to be 'broken in' is actually a misconception - shoes should fit when you buy them. Naturally with specialized shoes such as hiking boots or football boots, there needs to be room enough to manoeuvre and add pressure, not to mention the likelihood of you wearing thick socks when wearing them; this needs to be taken into account too.

Because the internet allows us to browse footwear from an international market, the choice available may at first seem a little bit overwhelming. Most of the high street retailers now have online stores which are updated regularly when they have new brands and styles into the shops. Where the list of retailers may seem endless, there are some websites that can help the consumer. Shopping websites will list those retailers that stock the best value-for-money products, and allow advertising for those retailers that might not have such a high profile as some as the other big competitors.

It is worthwhile remembering however, that the shopping websites might themselves be at risk of abuse from those retailers that don't have a great reputation. They may pay to be advertised or affiliate sites, which can entice customers despite not being as reputable as others. This is why it is important to consider the terms and agreements of sale, refunds and return on the website and check for recommendations from previous customers.

One of the biggest advantages of buying online is that there are many more opportunities for discounts than in the high street stores. Because it is essentially cheaper for a retailer to advertise online, and because there is a fiercer competition from international markets, it is in their own interests to offer the most competitive prices. Finding reductions, sales, incentives such as polish, extra laces or even matching accessories can also be an added bonus.
