Choosing a Cottage Holiday

In an era when our lifestyles seem as hectic as ever, finding a way to relax is becoming more important. The summer holidays have always been something that most of us will associate with a fortnight's break somewhere in the sunshine, perhaps with a bit of sand and sangria not too far away; but for anyone looking for something a bit different, something with a little bit more of a personal touch, then taking a break on a cottage holiday might be the answer.

Ideal for a short weekend stay or for an entire summer, cottage breaks can provide people with the comforts and privacy of home in the location of their choice. They come in all sizes so any number of people can holiday together, making them ideal for couples on a romantic break, families looking for something a bit different, or as seems to becoming more popular, a great break for stag and hen weekends.

Because the internet allows cottage owners to advertise internationally, the choice in where to stay is wide. Renting cottages in Europe can be popular perhaps because there's more of a guarantee of good weather, but the most popular choice for cottage breaks tends to be right here in the UK, and it is easy to understand why when considering how many beautiful places there are to visit.

The decision of where to stay needs to be appropriate for the kind of holiday you're after: a stag or hen party, for example, might find the remote Scottish Highlands a little too quiet, yet this could be an ideal place for those who enjoy hiking and the general peace and quiet of being far from their hectic lives.

Checking out the nearest available amenities is something that everyone should consider, especially if the break is for longer than a weekend. Whilst most locations will have some sort of tourist information, the internet is still likely to be the best place to do your research. Finding out where the nearest town is located should be a priority, as this will give you some idea about where the nearest shops and pubs are, and of course, give you some idea about what else the area has to offer such as museums, restaurants and any other local attractions.

When renting a cottage, it is always best to get as much information about the actual building itself. The more popular cottages selected for holidays tend to be older buildings simply for their aesthetic value, but there are no guarantee as to how modern the inside might be when it comes to amenities and appliances. Where some cottages might be fully modernised with television, DVD, games, and internet connection, others, particularly those that are privately owned, might be much more modest.

Because the internet allows for a wider choice in cottages, it is always best to do a bit of research before parting with any money. Simply knowing where to begin the search can be a little overwhelming so a 'shopping website' can be a great place to begin. These sites are rather general but are a great way of assessing the best value-for-money holidays and list those affiliate websites that come highly recommended. A simple search through the 'travel' category and it is easy to browse the various organisations, travel agencies and perhaps even private packages that have cottages available for rental.

Whilst a private rental might seem more cost effective, it is worth remembering that a cottage rented through a travel agency is legally approved by a relevant trade body such as ABTA; this could reduce insurance at the very least, and guarantees that there will be someone to assist should anything go wrong or the stay not be satisfactory.

Whether it be privately owned or rented through an agency, checking references from previous holiday makers is always recommended, particularly those that are specific about the cottage you intend to stay in. As well as being able to give details about the amenities and condition of the cottage, they can give insight into the value for money and level of service they received from the agency or owner.

For anyone who has any special requirements, then a cottage holiday organised through a reputable agency might be the answer. Anyone that might require easy walking access for example, should be able to find a recommended property online, and likewise for specific requirements such as disabled access and amenities, or a child's cot.

In most cases of renting a cottage for any length of time, there will be some sort of agreement to sign, particularly those that are rented by private owners; although it is always worth checking the small print for any anomalies, these agreements are relatively standard and are there simply as an assurance to the owner. Check for liability on what bills you may have to pay or whether gas and electric for example, are included in the overall rental cost. Details on time of arrival and departure may be specified for cleaning and key handover purposes.

Cottage holidays in the UK can be ideal for anyone who has a pet that they want to keep with them for the duration. There are many places that will accommodate pets though naturally there may be some regulations you might be asked to adhere to, such as keeping them off the furniture or exercising them outside the garden.

It is always worth remembering that booking online will usually mean that you can research owners and agencies to find the most competitive deals and best locations, but also that it might expose you to some discounts and offers that might not apply when reserved in other ways.

For anyone wishing to travel outside of the UK then the internet can be a great source of information in checking any VISA or passport requirements that need to be made. It is always recommended that you get the right insurance to cover the trip and personal safety; so many people like to think they're being optimistic by not doing this but paying just a small price can effectively save a lot more money down the line if anything should happen. The internet is an easy way to compare insurance rates, and in the case of most shopping websites where you might be researching holiday destinations or cottages to stay in, then there will be several travel insurance links as well, so you can effectively organise the entire holiday in one sitting from the comfort of your own home.
