Choosing a Country Holiday

Whilst Spain and France continue to remain the most popular holiday destinations for us Brits, the competitive costs in international flights have certainly opened the gates for easy travel to more exotic destinations. However, for anyone looking to stay a little closer to home, a shorter break, or for something a little bit cheaper, then holidaying in the UK can make a perfect solution.

Despite the many beautiful destinations in the UK, so many of us seem to prefer the warmer climates of abroad, but the British countryside is famed for its serenity and natural beauty and, thanks to the internet, discovering these locations has become a whole lot easier.

From the Lake District to the Peak District, the Scottish highlands, Irish coast, Norfolk Broads and the New Forest; cottages and holiday parks can be found all around the UK, each with something very different to offer any visitors. Ideal for romantic weekend breaks, hiking holidays, or a bit of fun for the stag and hen weekend breaks, the choices are varied and unique.

Beginning the search for the ideal country break away is easy; a simple browse through a shopping website will direct you towards those deals that offer the best value-for-money and come highly recommended by previous guests. Having topical affiliate sites in one place makes the research process that little bit quicker and allows for comparison with other companies or private owners.

There are several holiday agencies throughout the UK that offer breaks either in local hotels, bed and breakfasts, camping sites and private cottages for that more home-from-home holiday. Whilst a search might lead you towards the owner of a private cottage, be sure to see if they have an established website listing all the details you might need to know in advance of parting with any money. Booking through an agency can be safer in many respects simply because they will have more experience and be approved by legal authorities, giving that reassurance of tenancy agreements and health and safety awareness.

Online searches allow people to be more specific about what it is they're after, not just in terms of catering facilities, but for any particular requirements or special needs that you may have. Most websites should have details about wheelchair and disabled access, and will give details about which accommodation welcomes pets, whether it's more child-friendly, and what the interior amenities and facilities are like.

Most accommodation tends to come equipped with modern appliances such as TV/DVD and even internet access for those who might require it. However, if it's a complete break from the hectic world you're leaving behind, then something more traditional such as an open fire for those cosy nights in, might feel more appropriate.

A simple search on the internet will be able to determine what to expect when you arrive at your chosen location. For anyone looking for something a bit more relaxed, then look for pictures on the types of views you can expect, and of course the nearest local pubs for a boost of energy at lunchtime or a reward in the evening. Lists of nearby attractions such as theme parks, golf courses and clubs to keep the children entertained (whilst mum and dad take a break), are all easy to find online and in most cases will be supplied by the country holiday website.

The maximum stay for guests tends to be around 14 nights, though there are exceptions for those wanting to stay that little bit longer; and for those that who just fancy a few days away, then discounts can be found for reservations covering midweek days. Holiday agency websites should give full details of all costs and include secure payment protection.

To get the most out of your holiday, researching the area as well as the accommodation you're going to be spending time in is always worthwhile. Look out for any local attractions, festivals, museums, places of local interest, and look out for recommendations on restaurants and shops from previous guests. For anyone looking to meet new people during their stay then perhaps a hotel break might be a better option and most websites can list those hotels or check for availability on your behalf.

Buying online itself can save money in the long run. Because the advertising costs can be much lower for travel agencies, and because of the wider audiences they get on the internet, it is easier to find more competitive prices and discounts where the agencies might be saving on administration costs. One travel agent that specializes in UK holiday parks offers a 20% discount when reservations are made online, whilst another includes free travel insurance.

Whilst shopping websites can be a great place for those lesser known and new holiday agencies to advertise, the shopping website itself isn't necessarily able to vet the overall service of a company. In general the websites are simply a platform for affiliate sites, enabling customers to browse a particular topic for themselves. Therefore, always be sure to research the company as much as possible before making any bookings. A professional and legitimate business should have a clear and concise website that gives full details on cancellation and refund policies, and they should certainly give lists of all total costs (i.e. include details on whether rent you pay includes utility bills as well).

Many people tend to overlook the need for travel insurance, and for some a simple weekend break away in the UK might not be deemed as 'risky' in comparison to more exotic destinations. However, for just a small fee it is worth ensuring that you have a safe and happy break, particularly in instances where you might be taking part in outdoor sports and activities.

Anyone looking to do something a little bit different for their holidays this year should consider booking a country holiday online and see for themselves why these destinations are growing increasingly popular. Most holiday companies will also have a brochure that gives even further details and choices in locations.
