Set in the elegant and trendy Los Angeles area of West Hollywood, this slick and wickedly funny ground-breaking drama series follows the lives and loves of a close-knit group of lesbians, their family, relations and friends. It explores the ups and downs, highs and lows of their day to day lives, addressing controversial taboos as they struggle with their careers, deal with relationships and face the challenge of starting a family. Having recently graduated from the University of Chicago, aspiring writer Jenny (Kirshner) moves to chic Los Angeles to be with her boyfriend Tim (Eric Mabius). She makes friends with a group of professionally successful and attractive lesbians, including a pro tennis player, writer, museum curator, hair stylist and cafe owner at a party thrown by Tim’s neighbours Bette (Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman), a committed lesbian couple of 7 years, who are planning to venture into parenthood.
The series sees them undergo the stress of artificial insemination, pregnancy and miscarriage, altering the dynamics of a once perfect existence. Here Jenny meets Marina (Karin Lombard), owner of the coffee house The Planet, which is the meeting place for the women to gather every day and focal point of the show. Marina challenges Jenny’s apparent heterosexuality and Jenny finds herself questioning her own sexuality as she enters a new and intriguing world. Other friends include Alice (Leisha Hailey), a magazine writer constantly on the look out for the perfect woman, predatory hairdresser Shane (Katherine Moennig) always hunting for pleasure, and pro tennis player Dana, still in the closet and lacking experience in the dating game but searching for true love nevertheless.
Series 2 contains special features including an audio commentary, ‘Land Ahoy’ with Erin Daniels, Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig, ‘Showtime on the Record’ and ‘Playing with Girls’ featurettes, and the L Word Game. The series finds the women striving for success and happiness in their personal and business lives. Museum curator Bette cheats on long term partner Tina, pregnant after further artificial insemination, leaving her unhappy with the single life. One of the women has to address her addiction to alcohol in an authentic and emotional storyline. Jenny’s ex-boyfriend moves out, while Shane and Jenny compete for new girl, arrogant DJ Carmen’s affections. Bette and Tina struggle to stay together, while Dana and Alice provide some emotional scenes as they become lovers. With Marina gone, Kit takes over and converts The Planet into a night club, providing a platform for bands to guest star. Emerging film maker Mark (Eric Lively) moves in with Shane and Jenny and installs hidden cameras around the house in order to discover what lesbian life is really like.
Series 3 includes episodes ‘Labia Majora’, ‘Lost Weekend’, ‘Lobsters’, ‘Light My Fire’, ‘Lifeline’, ‘Lifesize’, ‘Lonestar’, Latecomer’, ‘Lead, Follow Or Get Out Of The Way’, ‘Losing The Light’, ‘Last Dance’ and ‘Left Hand Of The Goddess’. It sees Alice and Dana splitting up, and Kit finding love with a younger man as she hits the menopause. After the first two series of bed hopping, Shane falls for and commits herself to the rotten Helena (Rachel Shelley) and gets involved in a case of sexual harassment. Tina gets a movie studio job and drifts apart from Bette as she becomes attracted to men once more, resulting in a battle for custody of their baby daughter. This series also introduces a new character, Moira/Max (Daniela Sea), who is undergoing sex change treatment.
