Company Background
Lonely Planet was an idea spawned from the real life experiences of Tony and Maureen Wheeler and their travels around the globe. The first book, Across Asia on the Cheap, was published over 30 years ago and covered their first trip (actually their honeymoon) across Europe and Asia over land all the way to Australia. 1500 copies of this original book were sold within a week and the rest, they say, is history. Hundreds of books and guides have been published since then and provide hundreds of thousands of travellers with the perfect personal accompaniment for their trip.
Product Ranges
There are a number of different guides available depending on the type of trip that you are trying to plan such as destination guides, language guides and activity guides.
Destination guides are the perfect general guide if you are visiting a particular country or city and looking for a wide range of information. Detail levels are good and will cover many different activities and locations of interest. You will find information covering local history, flora and fauna, places of interest, bars and restaurants, accommodation and many more.
Language guides offer the more linguistically challenged among us with an excellent chance to learn some useful local phrases to help us along the way. These will cover simple tasks such as ordering a coffee in a bar or picking a steak from the restaurant menu to the more advanced tasks of booking exciting excursions with the locals. Many countries are covered and most of the books will include local dialects so that you can try to fit in as best you can. Even if your language skills aren't up to scratch, just showing that you are trying will be appreciated by the locals.
Activity Guides cover some of the most exhilarating activities to be found in some of the best locations around the globe. Whether you are interested in diving at the Great Barrier Reef, mountain biking in the Alps, hiking in the mountain ranges of Nepal or taking a stroll around the huge National Parks of Northern America then these guides could be just the thing.
Languages
Due to the interest shown by people from all over the world, Lonely Planet Travel Guides are now available in eight languages including Italian, German, French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese and of course English. In August 2006, Lonely Planet printed their 80 millionth book emphasising their position at the top of the travel guide food chain.
Reseller Locations
As mentioned above, Lonely Planet has printed a huge number of books over the years so naturally there are a vast number of locations in which to buy one. No book shop would be complete without a full range of Lonely Planet guides adorning the shelves of the travel section. Personally I believe that these are the best locations for book purchases as you can have a quick flick through the book to get a better idea of the content.
The Lonely Planet website features an on-line shop, http://shop.lonelyplanet.com, and is a great place to check out the latest books on offer and can be sorted by destination, language or activity.
You can of course search the on-line retailers which will offer a large selection at competitive prices. If you are looking at purchasing a number of books for a particular trip then this may be the best choice for you combining all of your purchases to cut down on postage costs.
What can you expect to pay?
Depending on the retailer you can expect to pay between £10 and £20 for a guide whether it be country, city, language or activity guides. If you shop around or possibly visit a second hand book shop then you may be able to reduce the price. Just be sure to remember that it will be very useful having the most up to date information at hand so try to get the latest edition of the book where possible.
What else is on offer?
The Lonely Planet website contains some great content that should definitely be explored prior to your trip. You can find recent location reviews by travellers who have been guided by the books including stories of their experience, pictures and on-line diaries. As well as the obvious details of the books on offer and the on-line store already mentioned, there is also a hotels and hostels section allowing you to search and book accommodations in the area you are travelling to. You will again find more customer reviews here which is an invaluable addition if you want to be sure you are getting what is actually pictured.
>From the website, you will also find a link to Lonely Planet TV (http://www.lonelyplanet.tv) which offers yet more useful information from uploaded videos to maps and forums.
In conclusion
Lonely Planet Travel Guides have been built upon personal experiences from many of the authors over the last 30 years. They seem to be getting better and better by year with new editions created to keep the products updated with relevant information. Before you embark on your next holiday be sure to consider purchasing a Lonely Planet Travel Guide as it will be an invaluable companion to help you along the way throughout your trip.
